Coach Tommy Tuberville Makes Super Bowl Prediction
The Alabama senator scouted a high school "gym rat" named Patrick Mahomes when he was coach at Texas Tech...
While nerds first learned of Tommy Tuberville during his successful campaign for Senate, fans of college football have been following his long career as a coach–where he actually scouted a young athlete named Patrick Mahomes, but he never got to coach the player who many falsely believe is the NFL’s Greatest of All Time.
Tuberville discussed his thoughts on Mahomes as an incoming college player on Jason Whitlock’s podcast this week–and also offered his thoughts on who’s going to take home the hardware this year.
Back in high school, Mahomes played basketball, baseball, and football–and he now attributes his time playing all three sports to his success at slinging the pigskin. Mahomes was a gym rat, per Tuberville, which comes to the surprise of absolutely no one.
“I hate that I didn’t get to coach Patrick, but I’m not surprised at what he’s done over the years,” he lamented. Fortunately for Tuberville’s connections to today’s big game, however, he did coach at the University of Cincinnati while a guy with lots of newfound fans–Travis Kelce–was setting records as tight end. He did, however, just miss out on overlapping with dad-bod legend Jason Kelce.
As for what he thinks is going to happen tonight? Tuberville thinks that the defense and the run game are what win Super Bowls (don’t tell Bill Belichick haters about the former!), and that’s enough to power the San Francisco 49ers to a win that’ll end up being something like 28-20.
Between players like Fred Warner, Nick Bosa, and Christian McCaffrey, it’s easy to see how the 49ers have the advantage in those two key matchups.
For his part, Whitlock said that he’s a big fan of Kansas City’s head coach, Andy Reid, and its general manager, Brett Veach, but he’s going with the San Francisco 49ers by a field goal. The off-field problems that Patrick Mahomes’s dad is facing with another DUI arrest remind him of when Andy Reid’s son hit a girl while drunk driving–and the distraction couldn’t have helped the Chiefs in their game against Tom Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who completely destroyed them.
As for my take? It’s hard to see the Chiefs losing. You don’t have the world’s most famous singer fly all the way from Japan to see her boyfriend lose in the Super Bowl.
I’m not saying the game is rigged…but we’ll see how everything plays out.
